Ontinyent is a medium sized town situated in the Albaida Valley. It has an important and historic “ Old Town “ with houses packed in to narrow winding streets and a modern town centre with all facilities and amenities including cinemas, theatres, museums, a good selection of schools, a hospital, health centre and sports centre. The sports facilities include an Olympic sized outdoor pool, an indoor heated pool, athletics tracks, racquetball and tennis courts. The centre also hosts various concerts through the year. There are numerous attractive parks and plazas around the town centre and a good selection of bars, restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes and budgets. There are several large supermarkets including Aldi and Mercadona and a weekly street market selling local produce, household goods, clothes etc. Amongst the many fiestas, the famous and colourful Moors and Christians parades take place at the end of August each year.
Ontinyent is surrounded by lovely countryside, mountains and natural parks. Just a 10 minute drive away takes you to the fascinating village of Bocairent built in to the hillside with cave houses and winding cobbled streets. The Sierra Mariola national park provides beautiful scenery and an important area for rural tourism and outdoor activities.
On the edge of town is a train station which connects to the town of Xativa – 15 minutes away and from there to the rest of Spain. Valencia and Alicante airports are an hours drive, both accessed by uncongested motorways. Gandia, the port and the beaches are a 45 minute drive away.
Ontinyent is the perfect place for a permanent comfortable family home and is a predominately Spanish speaking area ( as opposed to Valenciano ) with a small ex pat community of mainly British, Dutch, Belgians and Germans. Being further inland, villa prices are much lower than the coastal areas and this combined with the welcoming community spirit, has attracted many people to settle here.
